‘Dancing With the Stars’ scare: Authorities rush to scene after discovery of unknown powder

The Los Angeles Police Department and ABC confirm with EW that police and FBI authorities rushed to CBS Television City Friday after an envelope containing an unknown substance was delivered to the Dancing With the Stars production office. The scare, however, was short-lived: Police cleared the scene after discovering the substance in question was not a hazardous material, but talcum powder. A statement from ABC reads, “Security and the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department were immediately notified. Measures were taken to secure the area and ensure the safety of personnel.” The network and LAPD are not revealing any other details at this time.

Lily Allen battles septicaemia in hospital days after losing baby - Daily Mail

Last updated at 5:03 PM on 6th November 2010

Lily Allen was in hospital last night with the potentially lethal blood-poisoning condition septicaemia - just days after losing her baby.

The chart-topping singer was six months pregnant when she miscarried the baby she had been expecting with boyfriend Sam Cooper.

She had been recovering at home in Gloucestershire but was yesterday taken to hospital by ambulance.

Her spokesperson confirmed today: 'Lily Allen is back in hospital, where she is being treated for septicaemia.

'She is responding well to treatment and her condition continues to improve.

'Lily thanks everyone for their messages of support and again asks that she and partner Sam Cooper be left alone whilst she recovers.'

Last night a friend told the Daily Mail: ‘Lily had been recuperating at home with Sam and her family, but she has been taken back to hospital and is getting the best care possible at the moment.

‘Everyone is extremely concerned, but she is in the best place and luckily she was admitted quickly.’

Hours earlier Miss Allen thanked fans for their support following the miscarriage.

Writing on her Twitter page yesterday, the 25-year-old said: ‘I’m still very sick but the messages are helping me to be stronger. Thank you x x.’

She added: ‘Thank you for all your kind messages.’

Miss Allen has been a prolific user of the social networking website and last weekend she posted a poignant message saying simply ‘say a little prayer x’, before the problems with her pregnancy became public knowledge.

Septicaemia is a bacterial infection of the blood.

Septicaemia is a life-threatening condition where bacteria invade the bloodstream.

It is usually triggered by an infection in another part of the body, such as pneumonia, meningitis, bladder infections or even a tooth abscess.

The bacteria escape from this initial infection and enter the blood, causing a series of reactions that can lead to swelling of the blood vessels and blood clots.

The condition can occur after a miscarriage if any foetal tissue left inside the body becomes infected.

There are about 300,000 cases a year and up to 15,000 deaths.

If untreated, it develops into septic shock, where blood pressure drops and organs fail.

The symptoms develop rapidly and may include a high fever, violent shivering, faintness, delirium and loss of consciousness, as well as cold and pale hands and feet and rapid and shallow breathing.

Sufferers are normally given antibiotics to stave off the infection.

Miss Allen previously suffered a miscarriage in 2008 when she was dating Ed Simons, a pop star and DJ from the Chemical Brothers.

Following her second miscarriage, many celebrity friends sent messages of support, including Myleene Klass, Emma Bunton and Denise Van Outen.

Miss Allen, daughter of comedian and actor Keith Allen, started dating 32-year-old Mr Cooper, a builder, last year and has referred to him as ‘the love of my life’.

She had begun to effectively wind up her music career to prepare for motherhood and had bought a ?3million mansion in the Cotswolds in readiness for family life.

But she did perform at the Wireless festival in London during the summer.

She also recently set up a vintage clothing business, Lucy In Disguise, with her elder sister, Sarah Owen.

Miss Allen has released two best-selling albums - Alright, Still and It’s Not Me, It’s You - as well as a number of hit singles including The Fear and Smile.

‘Lily needs time to recover in privacy,’ the friend added.

(PEOPLE) -- Ricky Martin put on a brave face last March when he revealed to the world that he is gay.

But behind the scenes the singer was caught up in a maelstrom of emotion, he tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview airing on her show Tuesday.

On the day he sent out an e-mail announcing, "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Martin says he first felt "numb" and then "relieved."

Then, he said, the magnitude of what he'd done hit him.

PEOPLE: Ricky Martin thanks fans for their support

"When I realized, okay, I just pressed send, whoo ... I was alone," Martin, 38, says. "I was in my studio alone for a minute. My assistant walked in and I just started crying like a little baby. I started crying."

Martin is father to 2-year-old twin sons, Valentino and Matteo, via a surrogate and says his kids are the reason he felt he could no longer sidestep questions about his sexuality.

"I couldn't take it anymore," he says of the decision to come out. "It was too painful. But I guess the most important thing is my children ... When I was holding them in my arms I was like, 'What, am I gonna teach them how to lie?' Whoa, that is my blessing right there. Then, when I was holding my children I said, 'Okay, it's time to tell the world.' "

Rutgers Student Commits Suicide After Secret Sex Tape - People Magazine

Rutgers Student Commits Suicide After Secret Sex Tape A body found in the Hudson River has been identified as Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers University freshman who committed suicide after his roommate allegedly secretly filmed him having sex.

Tyler, 18, who jumped off the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, died from drowning and blunt force trauma, according to the New York Medical Examiner's office. The body was recovered Wednesday.

"Tyler was a fine young man, and a distinguished musician," says the Clementi family's attorney, Paul Mainardi. "The family is heartbroken beyond words. They respectfully request that they be given time to grieve their great loss and that their privacy at this painful time be respected by all."

Authorities say Clementi's roommate, Dharun Ravi, 18, set up a camera in their room and remotely turned it on without Clementi's knowledge. He also tried to stream it live on the Internet.

"Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay," Ravi wrote on his Twitter page Sept. 19.

Three days later, Clementi committed suicide. "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry," he wrote on his Facebook Page, New Jersey's The Star-Ledger reports.

Ravi and another student, Molly Wei, 18, have been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy after police learned the camera had been placed in the room without Clementi's permission, Middlesex County prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan says.

If convicted, they face up to five years in prison for the charges.

"If the charges are true, these actions gravely violate the university's standards of decency and humanity," Rutgers President Richard McCormick said in a statement. "Our university community feels the pain of his loss, and I know there is anger and outrage about these events."
