Celebrities react to Betty Ford’s death

Celebrities have been quick to respond to the death of former First Lady Betty Ford, who founded the eponymous center for addiction. Singer Stevie Nicks credited Ford with having “saved my life.” Gary Busey urged her family to “celebrate her life on the new plateau she is on.” Steven Tyler praised her “vision, passion, and amazing heart.” Gena Rowlands, who played Ford in a 1987 made-for-TV movie, called her “a national treasure.”

Harry Potter Behind-the-Scenes Blowout: Voldemort Attacks Hogwarts! - E! Online (blog)

Can Hogwarts survive this much evil?

Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is prepping to rain down with massive destruction on the beloved wizard academy. With just a few days before the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, it's time to go inside Hogwarts with day two of our behind-the-scenes peeks and watch as director David Yates leads the actors into two epically dramatic scenes.

MORE:  Which Harry Potter Witch and Wizard Are the Best? Vote Now!

Even with the camera crew in the shot, He Who Shall Not Be Named still looks as scary and evil as ever. And if you ever wondered how the filmmakers would stage an epic siege on the institution that taught all our favorite wizards and witches their craft, look no further. The size and scope is mind-blowing.

On the other, painful hand, Daniel Radcliffe sure knows how to take (or fake) a beating from Voldemort in a one-on-one duel. It hurts our hearts to watch our favorite wizard get taken down by this Dark Magic master, but it's comforting to know this is just acting. Hopefully after going through the directions on how to kick each other's asses and then acting it out, these two share a laugh and "good job."

What do you think of these clips? Can you wait until the Harry Potter premiere?

Don't forget to watch our livestream of the U.S. premiere this Monday!

Vinny Back in 'Jersey Shore' House - TMZ.com

7/10/2011 5:37 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

Apparently the "Jersey Shore" cast enjoys a big pain in the ass, because we've learned Vinny has returned!

0710_vinny_INF_exs
As TMZ reported Saturday night, Vinny and the cast went to dinner and a club last night, in an effort to heal the deep psychological wounds between them -- and apparently it worked. Vinny was spotted as he made his way into the house (above) ... carrying a bag of laundry.

We broke the story ... Vinny stormed out of the house a week ago and returned to his home on Staten Island, vowing never to return to the show.

What's interesting ... at the time he left the cast, crew and producers were happy about it -- or at least they said they were -- because he was a pain in the ass.

Maybe it was a story line, maybe it was just fickle silly youth -- Jersey has just regained the glory of Vinny.

Broadway star Karen Olivo joins ‘Harry’s Law’ as part of second season strategy — EXCLUSIVE

Karen-Olivo Image Credit: AP Images

Broadway actress Karen Olivo has nabbed a coveted series regular role on NBC’s Harry’s Law as part of writer-producer David E. Kelley’s second-season strategy.

This fall, Kathy Bates’ curmudgeonly defense attorney Harry Korn will start landing larger cases as her reputation rises. One of those clients will be played by Alfred Molina, who will appear in a three-episode arc at the start of the season as a murder suspect. Harry will also get some help, hiring a new hotshot lawyer played by Olivo. And with James Spader stepping into Bates’ CEO job on The Office, the award-winning actress will be free to fully focus on Harry’s Law.

Olivo originated the role of Vanessa in In the Heights and won a Tony for a performance in a production of West Side Story. She made headlines last year when her award-winning turn in West Side was unexpectedly cut short after a tragic stage accident that broke her foot. “[The door] clipped me on the shoulder as I was in full stride,” Olivo told Broadway.com. “Then I put my foot down, but it folded under me and I went down on the ground. I got up and fell again. Then I just crawled offstage, in full view of the audience.”

Olivo quickly bounced back — to TV, where she landed a multi-episode arc in CBS’ The Good Wife and, now, Harry’s Law.

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jul 8, 2011 6:53pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar organizers on Friday downplayed speculation that former talk show queen and Oscar nominee Oprah Winfrey might be hosting Hollywood's top film honors next year.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Winfrey, who ended the "Oprah Winfrey Show" in May to run her OWN cable TV network, has emerged as a top candidate to host the Academy Awards in February.

The Sun-Times, citing unnamed sources inside the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said organizers think Winfrey's presence would expand the show's audience and, given that her talk show ended only recently, they believe she will lure her legions of fans to the 84th Oscar show in February.

But the academy said no decision had been made.

"Every year there's always great interest and excitement about who will host the Oscars," the academy said in a statement. "This is a wonderful example of just that, and at this point, there is nothing for us to comment on regarding who is or is not on the rumored Oscar host list."

Winfrey was nominated for best supporting actress in "The Color Purple," and should she host the show, she would become the third solo female to do so behind Whoopi Goldberg -- who hosted four times -- and Ellen DeGeneres.

Earlier this year, actress Anne Hathaway co-hosted the Oscars with James Franco in an attempt by the Academy to lure in younger viewers.

However, only 37.6 million Americans watched the ceremony, making the telecast one of the least-watched Academy Awards shows of the past 10 years. It was down nearly 10 percent from the 41.7 million who tuned in the previous year when Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin co-hosted.

When ‘The Good Girl’ goes bad: Will audiences embrace a naughty Jennifer Aniston?

jennifer_aniston_horrible_bosses_240.jpg Image Credit: blog

In the raucous new comedy Horrible Bosses (in theaters today) Jennifer Aniston pulls off, in addition to her clothes, some rather impressive comedic feats. Playing against-type as a sexually aggressive dentist, she not only holds her own against a top-notch boys club, but she also silences her skeptics who argue she’s nothing more than a hair-do.

Even though Aniston is one of the most famous faces in the world, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a trace of her sweetness in Horrible Bosses. (And no, not because her hair looks different.) While the 42-year-old has done some fine work in lighter fare like Marley & Me, The Break-Up, and The Switch, it’s sometimes difficult not to see Aniston, or more specifically, traces of her Friends character Rachel Green. Heck, even in the cult classic Office Space, her chain restaurant employee, Joanna, seemed a close cousin to Central Perk-dwelling Rachel.

But in Horrible Bosses, that persona is long gone. While Aniston has always been funny (she has an Emmy to prove it, and even the folks at SNL thought so), she’s downright ballsy in her role, sexually harassing her employee, played by Charlie Day. Their interaction is arguably the strongest — if not funniest — storyline in the flick.

Though critics are applauding her brave performance, it still remains to be seen whether her fans will like this version of Aniston. While she has played un-sweet before — in the 2005 thriller Derailed, she was a seductive con artist who blackmails Clive Owen — that film famously tanked at the box office. Even when her sweetness was tempered with a little darkness, in indies like The Good Girl and Friends With Money, audiences stayed away despite relatively warm reviews. Does that mean audiences prefer Aniston as they know and love her, or was she simply not given better material before?

Aniston herself admitted she had a blast letting loose in the risky role and straying from her typical work on the big screen. As she told EW, “I had such a great time doing it. It was ridiculous fun. I never get that kind of fun stuff. It was great! You do tend to get locked into parts that you play, you know what I mean? People forget that there are other parts in there.”

Do you hope she takes on more parts like this, or do you prefer she return to her rom-com roots as soon as possible? I personally vote for the former, but at this juncture in her career, Aniston is once and for all proving she’s up for a challenge.

‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’ actress: ‘It’s not like we’re trying to make it American’

Torchwood Image Credit: Starz Original/2011 BBC Worldwide Limited

Ever since long-time fans of the Torchwood series learned major changes would take place within the series (most notably the show’s move to the United States from its native U.K.), expressions of worry and doubt have dominated the conversation surrounding its return. But newbie cast member Arlene Tur, who plays ER doc Vera Juarez in the “don’t call it a reboot” installment, thinks the first episode, airing tonight, will quell their fears.

“Initially, I was thinking that maybe they wouldn’t like it because they’re coming to the U.S., but I think they should be more proud that it’s a collaboration,” she says. “It’s not like we’re trying to make it American. We’re saying, ‘You have a great thing going and we’d like to join you.’ It’s a compliment more than anything. I’ve spoken to a couple of the British press, and they’re just taken aback by it. [But] I think their opinions have changed on that and so will the fanbase.”

Time will tell. Meanwhile, Tur isn’t the only new face debuting tonight. Here’s a run-down of some of the new faces (plus a few minor spoilers!).

Vera Juarez — A tough and curious ER doc who find herself playing an active role as the mystery wreaks havok on the hospital system. By episode 3, her connection to Miracle Day will deepen as she starts becoming more involved with the CIA. She’ll also get very close to another character.

Rex Mavizon (Mekhi Phifer) — He’s treated by Juarez after surviving being impaled on Miracle Day. Soon, he finds himself working with the CIA after his curiosity and intensity get the best of him.

Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) — Spared from death by lethal injection on Miracle Day and is a sick SOB (as you’ll see in the first episode). His release from prison is met with strong — and sometimes surprising — reactions. Makes a deal with the devil, so to speak.

Jilly Kitzinger (Lauren Ambrose) — Works for the devil.

‘Mad Men’s Michael Gladis talks ‘Leverage’ role

It’s been a year since we’ve seen Michael Gladis on Mad Men, but on this Sunday’s Leverage, he’s making a return to the PR world in a big and much more sinister way. Gladis plays Reed Rockwell, a public image consultant who goes above and beyond for his clients. “He goes to great lengths to protect his clients and often times that includes character assassination or destroying the reputations of his clients’ enemies,” Gladis tells EW.

Unfortunately for Nate (Timothy Hutton) and the team, Rockwell is a harder target than they are used to bringing down. Rockwell works in the shadows, so the usual public downfall won’t be as easy. The team soon realizes that they’re dealing with their own evil twin. “Nate kind of has to figure out how he’s bring himself down,” Gladis says.

The role is a definite change for Gladis, who usually plays gentle giants, but the actor says it’s a welcome one. “I love playing villains. It’s so much fun to be a bad guy,” Gladis said. “A lot of actors say that, but it’s true because you get to do terrible things without consequences.” And Reed Rockwell is full of terrible things. In the episode’s funniest scene, the team stages a couple over-the-top situations where Rockwell could easily intervene and become a hero. They soon find out they may have underestimated Rockwell’s ruthlessness.

Gladis has kept himself busy with smaller roles on TV since he left Mad Men in 2009. His role on Leverage is the latest in a series of guest spots that includes The Good Wife, Law & Order: SVU, and House. You may have also caught Gladis on the Conan O’Brien produced Adult Swim series, Eagleheart, without recognizing him. He plays Chris Elliott’s boss, Chief, under a fat suit and a heavy layer of makeup.

As for his Leverage episode, Gladis says there is a lot for fans to look forward to. “It’s not the kind of con they’re always pulling. There is a lot of insight into Nate’s character. There’s a little bit more of a window into the chink in Nate’s own armor.”

‘Horrible Bosses’ co-writer John Francis Daley makes McKinley High proud

john_francis_daley Image Credit: Jason LaVeris/Getty Images

It’s hard not to be proud of John Francis Daley in a way not dissimilar to how you would for your little brother. After all, he wasn’t just Lindsay Weir’s (Linda Cardellini) nerdy, sweet, but often-tortured little brother Sam on the beloved Freaks and Geeks. For fans of the criminally short-lived series, Daley’s Sam resembled the little brother we had or wished we had, because he perfectly encapsulated what it felt like to be a younger sibling.

With the good reviews pouring in for the hilarious Horrible Bosses, we can’t help but feel like a beaming older sibling for Daley, who penned the raunchy script along with Jonathan Goldstein and Michael Markowitz. While it’s hardly Daley’s first post-Freaks and Geeks triumph — Bones fans have been rather sweet on his character Lance for the past four seasons — it’s just another success for the wildly successful McKinley High, whose alums include James Franco, Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, Busy Philipps, and Martin Starr. If there were any justice for the all-too-short-lived series, their current run in Hollywood may be it.

With Horrible Bosses poised to do well at the box office, things for Daley — who has a brief cameo in the film as one of Jason Bateman’s equally beleaguered co-workers — continue to get better. The LA Times reported earlier this week that Daley and his Bosses co-writer, Goldstein, have been recruited to write a script for a Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs sequel. Sony Pictures Animation, which made the first Cloudy, wouldn’t yet verify the news about the follow-up film, but they tell EW the report itself was “not inaccurate.” In other words, we may have another reason to be proud of Daley very soon.

Does that fact that John Francis Daley wrote Horrible Bosses make you want to like it more? Share in the comments section below, PopWatchers!

Spotted: Chord Overstreet, Emma Roberts Party With Potter - MTV.com

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with staff members. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

Though Chord Overstreet's future on "Glee" is uncertain, he isn't letting the hubbub keep him down; the 22-year-old's been cavorting all over London this week with gal pal (and girlfriend?) Emma Roberts. Last night, the two were spotted leaving the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" after party, where Emma looked tres chic in a black and tan Max Mara dress.

Earlier in the week, the duo were snapped shopping in London's Notting Hill Gate (Aunt Julia would be so proud!), fueling rumors that they are indeed a couple.

Emma isn't the only pretty blond Chord's been keeping company with this year. In February, he attended a hockey game in L.A. with songstress Taylor Swift. At the time, Chord laughed off any speculation saying, "The thing is, I have tons of friends I hang out with and if you get your picture taken with anyone, all of a sudden you're dating."

Sometimes, Chord, the camera doesn't lie.

‘Evel Dick’ Donato exits ‘Big Brother’ house

Dick-Donato-Brother Image Credit: Cliff Lipson/CBS/Landov

That was fast. CBS announced today that Dick Donato, aka Evel Dick, has left the Big Brother house. The show just premiered Thursday. ”Due to a personal matter, Big Brother houseguest Dick Donato had to leave the game unexpectedly on Thursday,” a CBS statement said. “His departure will be addressed on the episode to be broadcast on Wednesday, July 13.”

Donato went MIA not long after appearing in the premiere episode. Anyone who tuned into Big Brother: After Dark on Showtime late Thursday should have noticed that he was nowhere to be found. In the meantime, BB blogs began noting that he went into the Diary Room and never came out. His daughter Daniele (who entered the house with Evel Dick as a pair) began inquiring about his whereabouts while the other players simply thought it was a ruse.

Donato was a volatile and polarizing player from season eight who ended up winning the $500,000 cash prize. (His daughter came in second.) During last night’s premiere, Donato claimed he had not spoken to Daniele in three years and was relatively low key — a stark contrast to the impetuous demeanor he displayed during season 8. Daniele Donato, meanwhile, looked visibly uncomfortable and talked very little during the telecast. Her new, dark ’do looked pretty legit, though (she was a blonde during season 8).

The Donatos were supposed to be part of a new twist this season that includes mixing old BB pairs with new ones. The other pairs from previous seasons are Brendon and Rachel and the very popular Jeff and Jordan.

Patrick Muldoon and Christie Clark return to ‘Days of Our Lives’

Auston-Carrie-Days-Lives Image Credit: NBCU Photo Bank/AP Images

Some old lovers are returning to Salem. EW has confirmed that Patrick Muldoon (Austin Reed) and Christie Clark (Carrie Brady) will make their way back to the NBC sudser in September. Clark last appeared on Days in 2010, having worked on and off on the soap since the mid-80s. Muldoon left the show in 1995 to launch a TV (Melrose Place) and film (Starship Troopers) career.

They’ll go in front of the Days camera next week.

The return of Muldoon and Clark is just one many changes that Executive Producer Ken Corday is planning for the venerable soap. After hiring two new head writers to replace Dena Higley, Corday’s team has promised to return to more character-based storylines this fall. In addition, the show recently hired Freddie Smith (90210) to enter a same-sex relationship on the traditionally conservative show.
