Breaking: NBC picks up 'Chase,' orders more 'Undercovers' - Entertainment Weekly

undercovers-chaseImage Credit: Trae Patton/NBC; Vivian Zink/NBCThis Just In: NBC has given a full-season pickup to rookie action drama Chase. Additionally, the net has ordered four more Undercovers scripts.

Oh, and the Chuck back-nine news I reported yesterday? It’s now official, only I’m told it’s actually a back eleven! That’s right, Chuck‘s fourth season will be 24 episodes long!

Season to date, Chase is averaging 6.5 million viewers and a 2.0 in the 18-49 demo. While those numbers are hardly spectacular, it’s an 18 percent improvement over what The Jay Leno Show was doing in the Monday-at-10 time slot last year. Undercovers, meanwhile, continues to struggle on Wednesdays at 8. NBC, however, is happy with the show creatively—as well it should be.

'Hawaii Five-O' bingo: Our board!

alex-oloughlin-hawaiiImage Credit: Neil Jacobs/CBSSteve McGarrett started off last night’s episode of Hawaii Five-0 sleeping next to the most perfect woman ever. She’s a Navy lieutenant who catches bad guys, is a great cook, likes her steak bloody, doesn’t seem to mind if you disappear for 36 hours at a time, and is played by Michelle Borth, last seen in flagrante on Tell Me You Love Me. Steve and his dream girl were all set to skip breakfast. They rubbed noses. They kissed. “I think I’m vibrating,” says Ms. Perfect. CBS, I know it’s 10 p.m., but behave yourself! Oh, wait, no, hahaha, it was just the iPhone. The Caller ID proclaimed: “Governor Jameson.” Thanks, Uncle iPhone!

Shenanigans ensued. The first bad guys of the evening were girl-enslaving gangsters, but then the real bad guys were Filipino terrorists. Meanwhile, the Steve/Danno flirtation reached a new high level of low geekery: Steve asked Danno if he ever made it to the Double-Pretzel level of Ms. Pac-Man. Danno: “Triple-Banana, bitch.” God, these guys are awesome. In the end, the evil Coach Tanaka was captured, the diplomat’s daughter was saved, and Steve treated his ladyfriend to a roast dinner on the beach. Except, uh-oh, they got too distracted by each other’s ridonk hotness to finish dinner! So, to recap the narrative arc of the latest episode of Hawaii Five-0:

1. Steve McGarrett had hot glamorous sex with the perfect woman.

2. Steve McGarrett solved a mystery and defeated terrorism in the Philippines forever.

3. Steve McGarrett had hot glamorous sex with the perfect woman on a beach.

Derek Hough & Jennifer Grey Talk 'Dancing' Tiff - Access Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough’s on-screen sparring during their “Dancing with the Stars” rehearsals may have looked tense on Monday night’s competition show, but the pair told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson it was just a blip on the radar.

“I knew from experience, when you have a four-and-a-half minute tiff [in a filmed rehearsal], they’re like, ‘Gold! It’s gold!’” Derek told Shaun of how the pair’s brief rehearsal fracas ended up highlighted on “Dancing.”

“In the week we were laughing and joking,” Derek added. “I pretty much knew the whole week that, that is what was going to be [on the show].”

Before Monday’s “Dancing” even hit the airwaves, Derek Tweeted that a big drama was coming.

“I did,” he said of warning the Team Jennifer/Derek fans on Twitter of the then-upcoming footage. “We had a little [tiff] at the beginning, but no big deal. That’s what it is and to be honest, it’s quite evident and clear. I don’t think we give the impression that we don’t get along.”

“No, we’re crazy about each other,” Jennifer added. “Just, you know, we get tired.”

The pair lost their top leaderboard spot for the second time this season on Monday night (Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy took the night’s top score), and after scoring just 25 out of 30, Jennifer and Derek admitted to being a little disappointed.

“We are perfectionists and we are hard on ourselves,” Derek said. “We are thrilled we still got great scores and came in second.”

Next week, Derek said they would be stepping things up a notch.

“It’s going to get crazy because we have two dances to learn, but I’m excited,” he said. “I feel like Week 5 is, ‘Oh! Now we are on the other side — towards the end. I’m excited really inspired.”

Kristen Stewart Describes Picking 'Breaking Dawn' Wedding Dress - MTV.com

NEW YORK — Will it be lacy or silky, modern or vintage? Will there be sleeves, a long train or a plunging neckline? Maybe a bodice, buttons or a bustle?

These are just a few of the pressing questions fans have about easily the most important wardrobe choice in the entire "Twilight" series: Bella Swan's wedding dress. Production on the two parts of "Breaking Dawn" is about to begin, and everyone's wondering what Bella will be wearing when she finally ties the knot with Edward Cullen.

We put that very question to Kristen Stewart on the red carpet for "Welcome to the Rileys" Monday night. Turns out that the 20-year-old actress has, in fact, gone through a fitting, but they haven't yet selected the exact gown she'll be wearing in front of the camera when the shoot gets under way.

"I haven't put the one on yet," she said.

Though she didn't delve into detail about what she's looking for in Bella's dress, Stewart did admit that it's a hugely important choice — for herself and for fans — and that she's happy to have the opportunity to make her preference known about the dress she feels is the right fit.

"To be honest, it's such a big deal. It's such a big decision. I have a little hand in having a decision — or having an opinion more — but I think it's pretty much up to Stephenie," Stewart said, referring to "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.

"I'm not quite sure exactly what it's going to look like, but it will be beautiful, I'm sure," she added.

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1."

Bristol Palin’s ‘DWTS’ monkey suit: Walk, walk fashion baby

Bristol-PalinImage Credit: ABCBristol Palin is fast becoming Dancing with the Star’s most surreal performance artist. Last night she stumbled around in a yeti-shaped monkey costume before tearing it off so she could stumble around in a pink cocktail dress. Dance pro Mark Ballas toted her around as gamely as he could, but she still looked like she’d been drugged, outfitted and dragged onstage. This comes on the heels of the pantsless suit and the bedazzled Sarah. What can it all mean? Are the show’s costumers trying to gently push her off the edge? (Read more about the episode in Annie Barrett’s recap; Yes, one write-up is not enough to outline the ridiculousness of the evening.)

The ultimate question: Is Bristol the Lady Gaga of teen activists?

Kanye West Preps 5 Dark Twisted Fantasy Covers - MTV.com

If you don't like Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album cover art, then give it up. This guy isn't stopping with just one cover, nope he's coming with five.

"Well, actually, it's five covers," West said on Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere of his "Runaway" film. "And you get all five of them when you buy the album."

'Ye wouldn't spill what the other cover images look like or if artist (and frequent collaborator) George Condo would be creating them. But he did discuss the process behind the now-infamous Fantasy artwork, which portrays the rapper being straddled on a couch by a naked, armless, winged woman with a polka-dot tail. According to West, he wasn't aiming to create a controversy with the image; rather, he just went to Condo with a basic idea and was blown away by the result.

"I told [Condo] I wanted a phoenix, and that's what he came up with," said West. "And what I love about it is, both me and George express ourselves with our truest vision, not based on what society or culture feels is right, but what's truly in our heart, and I just know if George was in my class back when I was in kindergarten, and he came up with something like that, I would've been envious, like, 'Man, how did you come up with that character with no arms and the wings, man? That's cool!' ... And it's simply like that. I just really love the colors. I thought the colors were just amazing, and the imagery was amazing. I thought it was a cool, awesome cover."

What do you think of Kanye's making five album covers? Too much? Too few? Tweet us at @MTVRapFix or tell us in a comment below!

Kanye West's "Runaway" will premiere on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on MTV, MTV2 and BET, and will also stream live on MTV.com, BET.com and VH1.com, followed by a live Q&A session on MTV.

Fox off Cablevision in NY area over carriage dispute

Here we go again. After failing to close a new carriage deal, Cablevision at midnight ET dropped the Fox network from its system in the New York area that serves more than 3 million homes. Viewers through Connecticut, parts of New Jersey, the New York area and a small part of Philadelphia area will miss today’s start of Major League Baseball’s National League Championship Series and the New York Giants/Detroit Lions game on Sunday if Cablevision stands firm and continues to blackout Fox programming on Fox5, My9 and Fox29.  The World Series also begins on Fox Oct. 27.

Charles Schueler, Cablevision’s executive vice president of communications, released this statement late Friday: “News Corp.’s decision to remove Fox programming from three million Cablevision households is a black eye for broadcast television in America. News Corp has refused to negotiate in good faith and rejected calls from dozens of political leaders to not pull the plug and join Cablevision in binding arbitration. We demand that News Corp. put the viewers ahead of its own greed and immediately restore these channels to our customers and agree to binding arbitration to reach a fair agreement. What is News Corp. afraid of?

“News Corp.’s pattern of destructive tactics has become clear.  First, they terrorized Time Warner Cable customers for weeks; then they pulled regional sports and cable channels off Dish Network; and now they have pulled the plug on Fox 5 and My9 for 3 million Cablevision households.  Further, they are now threatening to pull their broadcast stations away from Dish Network’s 14 million customers in two weeks.  It is clear that News Corp. will pull the plug on any viewer, served by any cable, satellite or phone company, to get the money they want.”

Cablevision claims that it already pays News Corp. more than $70 million a year for its channels, and News Corp. is demanding more than $150 million a year for the same exact programming. Cablevision has reached agreements with every other major broadcast station in the market – NBC, ABC, CBS and Univision – and offered News Corp. as much or more for Fox 5 as it pays any of those stations.  But News Corp. is continuing to demand more for Fox 5 than Cablevision pays all of the other broadcast stations combined.

Yankees won the first game of American League playoffs.

'Hawaii Five-O' bingo: Let's play!

Scientists estimate that something ridiculous happens on Hawaii Five-0 roughly every five milliseconds. Every episode features hot chicks, hot dudes, malevolent gangsters, car chases, and shots of the Hawaiian coastline that will make you weep with envy. Daniel Dae Kim rides around on a massive motorcycle, Alex O’Loughlin executes some sort of incredible athletic feat of strength, Scott Caan snarks off, and Grace Park inevitably goes undercover in some sort of skimpy outfit. Lessons are learned. Family values are upheld in the most risque manner possible.

And now, you can play along at home! Click forward for a look at the Utterly Unofficial Hawaii Five-0 Bingo Board. Be sure to mark it off whenever O’Loughlin shows some skin, Park goes surfing, awesome cars awesomely crash, or a really tasty-looking fish swims across the screen. (The surfing square is a free space, because someone will always be surfing in Hawaii.) You might already be a winner!(Designed by Jef Castro)

‘Simpsons’ producer on Vatican’s assertion that Homer is Catholic: ‘I really don’t think he could go without eating meat on Fridays’

HOMER-CATHOLICImage Credit: FoxHe may drink too much and strangle his son—and, sure, there was that time he sold his soul to the devil for a donut—but Homer Simpson seems to have the Vatican seal of approval. In an article from the Oct. 17 edition of the Vatican publication L’Osservatore Romano—which also references a story in the Italian Jesuit magazine La Civilita Cattolica—Fox’s The Simpsons is praised for covering issues of faith, family, and Christianity (plus, they say prayers before meals!). There is also mention of the animated comedy’s 2005 episode in which Homer and Bart consider converting to Catholicism after Bart befriends a Catholic priest (voiced by Liam Neeson). “Few people know it, and he does everything he can to hide it… [but] it is true: Homer J. Simpson is a Catholic,” states L’Osservatore Romano, which also tipped its papal hat to the show last year during The Simpsons’ 20th anniversary celebration. (Perhaps they didn’t see The Simpsons Movie, in which Homer mocks churchgoers as “pious morons” who are “too busy talking to their phony-baloney god.”)

Simpsons HQ is flattered and amused by the attention from the Vatican. “My first reaction is shock and awe,” exec producer Al Jean tells EW.com, “and I guess it makes up for me not going to church for 20 years.” That said, Jean is quick to throw not-so-holy water on the Homer-is-Catholic assertion, pointing out that the family attends the First Church of Springfield, which is decidedly Presbylutheran. “We’ve pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic,” he says. “I really don’t think he could go without eating meat on Fridays—for even an hour.”

Do you think the Church has a case, PopWatchers? Or did you question Homer’s faith ever since the episode when he said, “I’m not normally a praying man, but if you’re up there, please save me, Superman!“

‘Jackass 3D’ sacrifices life and limb for $50 million; ‘Red’ lures in $22 million

jackass-3dStupid scored big with an estimated $50 million opening weekend for Jackass 3D, Johnny Knoxville’s third foray into theaters. The film, which lured in 15 percent more women than Jackass 2, may break the record for highest-grossing October opening of all time, if projections hold. The R-rated laugh fest will surpass Scary Movie 3, which earned $48 million back in 2003, and a single-day opening record of $21.8 million for its opening day Friday. The film scored well with audiences, mostly young males, earning a B+ from exit pollster CinemaScore.

The weekend was also successful for Red, Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of Warren Ellis’ cult graphic novel. The movie, which earned an A- from audiences, grossed $22.5 million this weekend for a second place finish. Starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and a slew of other pedigreed actors, Red drew in a primarily over-35 crowd, but that could expand with positive word-of-mouth.

Third place belonged to The Social Network, which continued to hold well in theaters its third weekend out. The David Fincher-directed flick fell only 29 percent for an additional $11 million and a three-week cume of $63.1 million. Fourth place went to Secretariat, which earned $9.5 million its sophomore session. The Diane Lane-starrer fell only 25 percent its second weekend–the best week 2 hold of any film in 2010–to put its total take of $27.5 million. And spot 5 went to the Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel dramedy Life As We Know It, which earned $9.2 million and a total gross of close to $29 million.

The rest of the top 5 belonged to holdovers with Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole earning another $4.2 million and a total gross of $46 million. The Town continues to hold in well, grossing another $4 million to put its five-week cume at $80.6 million. Wes Craven’s My Soul to Take lost 40 percent of its opening frame value for a weekend gross of $3.1 million and a total cume of $11.9 million. Spot 9 went to the Emma Stone-starrer Easy A, which grossed another $2.6 million for a total cume of $52.3 million. Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps rounded out the top 10, grossing $2.3 million for a total of $47.8 million.

Even with such a strong showing from the two new releases and the holdovers, the weekend was still off around 5 percent from last year at this time. Come back next weekend when Paranormal Activity 2 opens and Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter goes wide.

‘American Idol,’ ‘Glee,’ and football top the list of most expensive broadcast TV shows for advertising

Advertising Age has just released its annual survey of the average cost of an advertisement on broadcast TV shows, and the results are fascinating brain candy for the TV fetishist. Fox dominates the ad dollars with five of the six most expensive shows on TV. The upcoming Simon Cowell-free season of American Idol ranks at No. 1 with an average of $467,617 for a 30-second spot. While slots 3-6 are taken up by Glee, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and House.

The list makes for interesting reading: check out the complete top ten after the jump. It’s especially fascinating to see the relative old age of all the most expensive shows: Setting aside Glee, the four youngest shows in the top ten are House, The Office, Grey’s Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives, which are all in their seventh seasons. (On the opposite end of the spectrum, The Simpsons is approximately a billion years old.) You can’t but wonder: Was 2004 the last year for new popular hits on broadcast TV?While you’re pondering that — keep in mind, 2004 also saw the debut of a tiny little pop culture juggernaut called Lost — enjoy some other fun bits of wisdom learned from perusing the Advertising Age survey:

Mike & Molly is the most expensive new show for advertising with an average cost of $189,160. Last year, that honor belonged to FlashForward ($175,724), so there’s no accounting for good taste.Dancing With the Stars‘ Monday broadcast would be No. 11 with $204,806 (although you could also factor in the Tuesday broadcast, which gets $167,821.)-CBS has only one show in the top ten — Two and a Half Men — but its shows tend to earn a groovy $120-150k. Conversely, NBC — which owns the No. 2 show, Sunday Night Football, and No. 8, The Office — only has five other shows that break $100k. (And one of them is The Event, so there’s no accounting for good taste.)-The least expensive hour of original programming is The CW’s Supernatural, with $29,100. But we still love it.-The CW’s most expensive show is The Vampire Diaries, with $74,913.NCIS: LA gets bigger dollars than NCIS ($154,670 vs. $150,708), so there’s no accounting for good taste.

Here’s the top ten most expensive shows for advertisers:

1. American Idol (Fox), $467, 617 ($400,546 for the results show)

2. Sunday Night Football (NBC), $415,000

3. Glee (Fox), $272,694 ($373,014 in the spring)

4. Family Guy (Fox), $259, 289

5. The Simpsons (Fox) — $253, 170

6. House (Fox), $226, 180

7. Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), $222,113

8. The Office (NBC), $213,617

9. Desperate Housewives (ABC), $210,064

10. Two and a Half Men (CBS), $206,722

'Lost': Changing views on finale?

lost-the-end-toutImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCDamon Lindelof and Cartlon Cuse are glad that you’re finally over hating the Lost finale. “Strangely, what happened over the last couple months, is that every single person loves it. It seems like that’s actually been a change,” Cuse said on the red carpet for the Spike Scream Awards over the weekend. (There was a big tribute to Lost during the ceremony, although it did not win best TV show.)

“The finale is like a relationship,” Lindelof said. “When it ends at first, you only remember why it ended. But as time goes on, you focus on why you were in it the first place. I think that is what is starting to happen now.”

Okay, I’ll accept that metaphor. The finale was indeed like the end of a relationship — one that had become baffling and unpredictable. “But we used to have so much fun!” I said, in the heat of a fight toward the end of things. And Lost said “I’m still having fun,” which struck me as very passive aggressive.

“I used to brag to my friends about what a special and unique show you were, how you held my interest and made my heart race, and surprised and delighted me for weeks,” I sighed.

“You said you liked CJ from West Wing, I gave you CJ from West Wing!” Lost said, throwing up his hands. “It’s like you change the rules every week.”

“No!” I said. “We were supposed to change the rules together! The crazy show and the crazy fan — it’s a classic,” I whimpered through my bitter, bitter tears.

“You can’t change me,” Lost insisted. “It’s not my fault you spent two seasons just seeing what you wanted to see. I never lied.”

A-sigh. I guess I’m over it? I mean, I know why we got together — it was really exciting there at the beginning — but I just can’t remember why we stuck it out for so long. Live and learn, I guess. Maybe this is why I’m having such a hard time trusting The Event….

What about you, PopWatchers? Have your feelings about the Lost finale changed? Are you over the bitter end to your love affair with the show? (Reporting by Nicholas E. White.)

Football rules on NBC, ‘Undercover Boss’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ take hits in ratings

sunday-ratingsImage Credit: Win McNamee/Getty Images; Michael Yarish/CBS; Craig Sjodin/ABCSports definitely ruled in primetime on Sunday, leaving shows like Desperate Housewives and Undercover Boss to scurry after their scraps. The latter two series, in fact, posted record low-rated telecasts among adults18-49 opposite NBC’s Colts-Redskins football matchup and Fox’s baseball playoff game between the Giants and the Phillies.

NBC won the night among 18-49 (5.4 rating/14 share) and total viewers (14.1 million) but CBS still managed to tie Fox for second place among adults 18-49 (3.0/8). CBS came in second for the night in viewers (11.8 million) while ABC followed in third with 9.2 million. Fox finished the night in fourth place among viewers with 8.9 million. Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.3 million viewers.

The Amazing Race averaged 11.2 million viewers on CBS and came in second place in the adult demo (3.4/9) for the 8 p.m. hour, behind football. Undercover Boss built on its time slot lead-in and averaged a 3.5/9, but was still down 5% versus last week. It was the reality show’s lowest-rated telecast ever and averaged 12.1 million. CSI: Miami, however, was up 4% versus last week among adults 18-49 (2.8/7) and averaged 11.1 million pairs of eyeballs.

On ABC, Desperate Housewives posted a 3.8/9 in the demo — down 3% versus last week and its lowest-rated fall telecast ever. It averaged 12.4 million. And Brothers & Sisters tied last week’s lowest-rated fall telecast ever (2.7/7) and lured 8.9 million. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (2.3/6) averaged 8.5 million.

Mel Gibson Confirmed For 'Hangover 2' - MTV.com

For those "Hangover" fans convinced the sequel can't possibly live up to the unpredictability of the first film, we have two words for you: Mel Gibson. The rumor mill has been all atwitter with reports that the temperamental actor will appear in "The Hangover 2." MTV News has can now confirm that Gibson has in fact been cast in the follow-up.

Not one, but two sources close to the production told us Gibson's cameo "is confirmed." The New York Post's Page Six reported some plot details on Monday (October 18): "Mel will make a cameo as a tattoo artist. Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot, where a Bangkok set has been built, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks. Then the production moves to Thailand at the end of October."

Although most of the storyline details are still under wraps, there have been rumblings about the guys taking a trip to Thailand to attend a bachelor party. And while it would have been easy to assume that Ed Helms' and Heather Graham's characters somehow end up tying the knot in the sequel, E! News recently reported that Graham will not reprise her role.

The film's original merry band of misfits, however — Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha and even Ken Jeong — are all signed onto the sequel. "Hangover" director Todd Phillips told Empire magazine recently that he's got plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

"It takes place in Bangkok and L.A.," Phillips said. "There's gonna be some f---ed-up surprises."

What do you think of Mel Gibson being cast in the "Hangover" sequel? Tell us in the comments!

‘Gossip Girl’: Face it, Jenny Humphrey comes back next week. Now, what should they do with her?

Gossip-Girl-Taylor-MomsenImage Credit: Giovanni Rufino/The CW No Gossip Girl tonight, friends. I know; dry your eyes. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably consoling yourself by watching the preview for next week on an endless loop. (It’s embedded below in case you’ve only watched it once.) In my multiple viewings of the promo, I’ve determined I want to punch Little J in her Big, Fat F (her FACE).

My frustrations with Jenny Humphrey extend beyond my minor gripes about Vanessa’s desperate ways, are miles deeper than my disdain for Dan Humphrey sex scenes, and tear away at my patience more than Serena van der Woodsen on her worst (and sluttiest) of days. Unfortunately, however, Jenny doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. It’s a sad, hard truth, I know.

So take a deep breath with me, and let’s brainstorm. Because unless a mad cab driver comes tearing across Park Avenue and parks his car on Jenny and the animal on her head, we might be stuck with her. (Quick note: Her hair in the photo above is actually not so bad. Hudson did her well. Hudson is a city, just to be clear.) So let’s do as Chuck Bass would do and use Jenny.

Ideas:

Have her pair with Juliet to take down Serena. When they both fail, maybe we’ll get rid of two for one.Feed her some humble pie. Once upon a time, I didn’t hate Jenny. This was back when she was a little girl from Brooklyn with a dream of becoming a designer. I cheered for her. Let’s see that girl again — and maybe she’ll bring her old eye makeup with her. I simply wish the show would bring back who Jenny Humphrey was and stop making her into who Taylor Momsen is.Make her regret giving away her, uhm, pie. In the preview, it really bugs me that Jenny seems proud that she gave away her V-Card to Chuck. I was hoping she’d take more dignified approach. That said, it’s never too late for self-respect. Jenny needs some.

Now your turn, PopWatchers. What should the show do with Jenny Humphrey?

(P.S. Gossip Girl returns next week!)

@EWSandraG on Twitter

Update: I like Jenny more in the Canadian promo. (Watch below.) But Canadian promos are sort of like rear view mirrors: Objects are more hateful than they appear. Or are they… ?

Will's kid Willow Smith makes music debut - Hollywood Reporter

NEW YORK -- Call her the Fresh Princess.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's 9-year-old daughter, Willow Smith, is making her debut as a recording artist.

She has signed a deal with Jay-Z's label, Roc Nation.

Her first song was released this week. It's called "Whip My Hair."

Jay-Z says it's rare to find an artist with such talent and creativity at Willow's age.

Will Smith first gained fame as a rapper, but unlike her father, Willow is singing on her record.

Like her father, she's a double threat: Willow appeared in the movie "I Am Legend," with her dad.

'Chuck': Full season pickup close

chuckImage Credit: Chris Haston/NBCAnd now for some Chucking unbelievable news: Chuck is on the verge of receiving a full-season pickup from NBC, sources confirm to me exclusively. Although a Peacock rep declined to comment, insiders tell me the network and Warner Bros. Television are ironing out the final details of the back-nine order as we speak.

Earlier this month, Chuck cocreator Josh Schwartz expressed cautious optimism about his little-show-that-could surviving past its initial order of 13 episodes. “NBC is really happy with it creatively,” he said. “This is Chuck. We never say die.”

Currently in its fourth season, Chuck has become a steady performer for NBC on Mondays at 8 pm. And in this climate, steady is the new up!

Let the celebration begin in the comments section! BTW, Chuck is all new tonight!

Texting: everyone’s doing it!

gossip-girl-testIn last week’s episode of Gossip Girl — pop culture’s No. 1 reference for all things tech — nearly every character took to typing on their phones to get back at one other. Even Serena’s professor busted out a text: Curt, to-the-point, sort of inappropriate. (Do professors text their students now?) But according to a new Nielsen study, the country’s real texters aren’t old enough yet to miss office hours. They’re too busy being dextrous and unsentimental. That’s right — they’re tweens. Kids aged 13 to 17 sent out texts at a rate of six per waking hour this past spring. Girls alone exchanged 4,050 per month — the volume of a slim novella. They’re texting so prodigiously, they’re not really talking anymore, according to Nielsen, and all for a simple reason: “Because it’s fun.”

As a texter myself, I have an explanation to my flurry of messages: Voicemail is annoying. You have to press things and wait and maybe you accidentally delete and hang up and call the person and they’re all, “Did you listen to my message?” and you have to explain and they have to repeat. I say, let’s follow the tweens. They know what they’re talking about. (Exhibit A: I started YA book The Hunger Games this weekend and couldn’t put it down.) Are you with me, PopWatchers? Txt 4 Ev?

'The Talk': First impressions?

The first day of any talk show is always a bit stiff, so the premiere edition of The Talk — with a panel featuring Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini, and Holly Robinson Peete — must be given a pass. Well, a partial pass. After all, these are all TV pros, even if, as Remini noted, some of them are more used to working with scripted material.

And that was the main flaw in the premiere: It seemed scripted down to the last second. The hour began with pre-taped “surprise messages” from the children of the hosts… except for Chen’s, whose child is too young to talk. (No one on the panel looked surprised at the messages, and Remini admitted she’d taped hers herself.) Chen’s husband, CBS president Les Moonves, provided the  Chen-Moonves household encouragement, saying, “I love my wife so much. And if it doesn’t work, I’ll cancel you.” Chen remained calm in the face of this, ascribing it to “my Asian Zen thing.”

“We have to give credit to Sara Gilbert, it was her idea” said Chen. Gilbert is the creator and co-producer of The Talk. It was said that “the idea is to be a women support group.” The panel didn’t tackle any “hot topics” in the manner of the show that has clearly inspired it, The View. We’ll see how long that lasts.

Christie Brinkley was the first guest, promoted as “her first interview in years!” She talked Botox (she’s not a fan), organic living (she’s a fan), and she thinks the hosts “have chemistry.” Chen asked the one question that made Brinkley grope for an answer. Bringing up the subject of Brinkley’s difficult divorce, Chen quoted the label Brinkley had applied to her ex: “narcissist.” At first, Brinkley said, “I’ve moved on,” but then, perhaps realizing this wasn’t exactly what she had been brought on for, said that the “divorce courts need to catch up with what’s happening in our country now.” The audience applauded heartily, but what the hell did that mean?

Marissa Jaret Winokur, who will provide taped, outside-the-studio segments, did an awkward segment interviewing various people about when and how they first spoke to their children about sex. It was so cutesy, I thought Gilbert’s face looked as though it was going to collapse into a snicker as the segment ended.

As I said, the first day of a talk show is always uneven. Osbourne said at the very end, “We’ve all been polite and nice. Maybe tomorrow we’ll be different.” She’s right: The talk on The Talk will have to get sharper, funnier, and more spontaneous — fast — or else Whoopi, Joy, Elisabeth and the gang will have a new hot topic to talk about on The View: The fact that Les Moonves’ finger is never far from the “cancellation” button.

‘Jackass 3D’ scores $20 million haul on Friday; ‘Red’ earns $7 million

jackass-3dImage Credit: Sean CliverWow, looks like stupidity is even better in 3-D. At least that’s what Johnny Knoxville and his crew of American idiots proved yesterday, pulling in an astounding $20 million on Friday for a weekend that’s bound to hit $40 million even if moviegoers drop off after Jackass 3D‘s opening night. The Bruce Willis-Helen Mirren-starrer Red also had a solid beginning, earning approximately $7 million on Friday for a three-day that could reach $20 million.

The Social Network looks like it will hold strong in its third weekend in theaters. The Oscar front-runner grossed another $3 million on Friday for what could be an impressive under-30-percent drop for the weekend, a number that will help the film reach its $100 million goal (the film’s domestic gross topped $52 million as of Thursday).

Last weekend’s two new wide releases also seem to be holding in well. The Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel romantic comedy Life As We Know It could drop a scant 40 percent for the weekend, earning around $3 million on Friday. And Secretariat, which opened weakly last frame, seems to be losing only 30 percent this weekend, also grossing around $3 million on Friday. Check back tomorrow for complete results.

Box Office Preview: ‘Jackass 3D’ and ‘Red’ compete for top slot this weekend

Mark Zuckerberg says ‘The Social Network’ got his clothing exactly right

Mark Zuckerberg spoke at a startup conference this weekend, and while much of his talk was about Facebook’s growth and business-y stuff, he did weigh in on The Social Network. And he seemed pretty chill about it, even though he said the filmmakers got one major theme completely wrong: “They just can’t wrap their head around [the idea] that someone might build something because they like building things.”

Still, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher got some parts exactly right, Zuckerberg said. “Every single shirt or fleece is actually a shirt or fleece that I own.” The Facebook chatter starts at about 6:30, but the rest of the talk is pretty interesting, if you’re into entrepreneurship and stuff.

No dig on Jesse Eisenberg or his awesome performance in The Social Net, but: Based on this clip, isn’t Andy Samberg a better Zuck?

'Jackass 3D' Guys Talk Sequel Plans - MTV.com

Although Johnny Knoxville and his "Jackass" crew say they never plan to make sequels to their very popular movies, the record-breaking $50 million haul "Jackass 3D" pulled in opening weekend might force them to at least try and plan ahead for a fourth film.

"We never make any plans," Knoxville told MTV News recently. "After the first and second one we said, 'We're done!' And here we are doing a third, so I think it would be foolish for us to do any declarations."

But physically, would the boys be up for a fourth film?

"Physically, yeah," Knoxville admitted. "Mentally, yeah."

"The two of us are healthier than we've ever been before," added Steve-O, who is now sober. "Although the other guys may be younger," he laughed.

Director Jeff Tremaine wouldn't give us a yes or no regarding a fourth film but echoed Knoxville's sentiments about not planning their movies — especially sequels — too far in advance.

"We made 'Jackass 3D' as if it's the last, just like we made 'Jackass: The Movie,' just like we made 'Number Two,' " Tremaine said. "So we think it's the end, but it's kind of stupid to predict, because here we are again."

As you may have noticed, there has been a four-year gap in between the release of each of the three movies. Tremaine has a good reason for this: "It takes four years truly to recover, mentally, more than anything."

Once they do manage to recover, it's up to the pranksters to come up with new ideas. "Four years go by, and slowly, I'll just, like, fax over something to Jeff, like a goofy idea," Bam Margera said about his process in coming up with new movie ideas. "Whether it's a really descriptive idea or it could be one sentence that says, 'Sh-- Shoe. Find a shoe, and then sh-- in it.' "

"I wasn't thinking about the third [movie] until we started filming it," Ryan Dunn admitted.

"I'm still not thinking about the third, and we already finished it," Dave England added.

Would you like to see another "Jackass" sequel? Let us know in the comments!

If you like Ed Hardy, cross Stonnington, Australia off your vacation destination list

Jon-Gosselin-Ed-HardyImage Credit: Splash PicturesIt’s time to add Stonnington, Australia to the list of world cities I am tremendously interested in visiting. It also might be time for TLC to consider filming an episode of Kate Plus 8 down under, because the city of Stonnington has just banned all Ed Hardy clothing. If only American lawmakers would take note of this glorious signage and rid our city streets of glittering skeleton shirts once and for all. It may eliminate “T-shirt time!” from the cultural zeitgeist, but I can live with that.

The hilariously aggressive sign, which was posted on the door of an Ed Hardy shop that has recently gone out of business, rightly lambastes the brand for “contravening style and taste laws,” before it dropped the f-bomb, naturally insulted the Jersey Shore (even in Australia!) and made a few digs at the type of person who’d wear the bedazzled t-shirts in the first place. I know this sign is not ever going to be backed up in a court of law, but it’s not the first time Australians decided to ban the wearing of Ed Hardy at public events; just last year, an event in Perth, Australia banned Ed Hardy in an attempt to create “an environment where people can be comfortable and confident.”

What do you think, PopWatchers? Would you like to live in a town where t-shirt time doesn’t exist?

Pregnant Celine Dion Hospitalized as Precaution - ABC News

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pregnant Canadian singer Celine Dion has been hospitalized in Florida as a precaution to prevent the premature birth of her twins, hospital officials said on Monday.

Dion, 42, was admitted on the recommendation of her doctors "to prevent the early delivery of her babies which is the standard of care for any patient with twin pregnancy in this clinical setting," St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach Florida said in a statement.

The Grammy-winning singer of hits like "My Heart Will Go On", has a nine-year-old son with her husband and manager Rene Angelil. The twin boys she is expecting in November are the result of a sixth in-vitro fertilization attempt, according to media reports.

The Florida hospital also denied some media reports that claimed Dion had scheduled a caesarean section delivery for October 22, handpicked her nursing staff and asked for rooms for her security team.

"At no time did Ms. Dion or her husband make any special demands or requests of the hospital. She is not scheduled at any predetermined date for her delivery. She has not requested or selected any particular staff or accommodations not available to other patients," the statement said.

Dion, one of the top-earning musicians in the world, is due to return to Las Vegas in March 2011 for a three-year concert residency at Caesar's Palace hotel and casino.

Dark And Twisted? Kanye West Fans React To His LP Cover - MTV.com

Kanye West's new album art boasts a painting featuring nipples, fangs and angel wings. Nothing too crazy, right? *sarcasm* Well, the rapper tweeted that major retailers aren't impressed with the LP and are banning it from their outlets, a claim that may or may not be true.

Although media reports suggest no ban has been instituted and outlets like Wal-Mart have not returned MTV News' request for comment, what is clear is that the cover is a polarizing one. On the streets of New York City, West fans were split over the cover for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which depicts two figures, one white and one black, in the nude and seemingly engaged in intercourse.

"I think it's provocative," Arrash Jalali told MTV News. "Definitely challenges the viewer to look a little bit deeper and wonder why he chose to portray such a provocative image for an album."

Sharaya Means, meanwhile, was only wondering one thing: "What was he thinking? Because it's very explicit. Not good at all, very nasty."

West's label, Island Def Jam, was reportedly concerned about the album art but ultimately told the rapper "the label would stand behind him" no matter what.

Some fans argued that West selected the art for the simple sake of being provocative. "I think he's out of big statements to say so he's trying to come with something that's going to stir it up a little bit, keep that hype going," Greg Moncada said.

And if Wal-Mart does end up banning the album, Sade Pilot has one idea of how to censor the art. "Maybe you should give him a gun instead of a beer bottle," she suggested, alluding to a bottle the illustrated male figure holds. "I know they sell guns at Wal-Mart, right?"

Derek Hough takes 'DWTS' Q's!

Baby Derek is back, and he would like to give you a high five. HIGH FIVE HIM! Thanks to all of you who submitted questions for Dancing With the Stars‘ own Fantastic Mr. Fox last week. Below, Derek helps us rev up for Week 5 with an all-readers’ Q&A!

You are doing a fantastic job with Jennifer [Grey] this season. How do you balance pushing and challenging her around her injuries? She looks fantastic for her age, but she is 50, not 30. Do you worry about pushing her too much, especially when you guys hit two dances for one week? –Susan
I do worry about pushing Jen, but the really great thing is that she’s a wonderful communicator. She lets me know when she can’t do something or when it doesn’t feel right and then we just change it up a bit to make sure it works for her. It’s very easy to forget that someone with her flexibility and stamina is 50.

I love your choreography. And I love seeing Louis and Dmitry on So You Think You Can Dance. Will you ever choreograph for SYTYCD? –Jwill
I don’t know that choreographing for them is in my future; they’d have to ask me and DWTS would have to give me permissions. But never say never.

Is there any chance that between X Factor duties, Cheryl Cole would perform “Parachute” on DWTS as a guest vocalist and you could dance with her as you do in the video? –Kate
If Cheryl were to ever perform on the show, I’d love to be able to dance with her. As of yet, I haven’t heard any rumors of her being booked on DWTS, though.

Derek, why do we never see you in any of the pro dances on Tuesday nights? I know you can’t do them every week (though I’d LOVE it if you did), but it seems like it’s becoming increasingly rare. –Sarah
I do the pro numbers when I’m asked, I just performed with Carlos Santana a few weeks ago. And I have an idea for one this season. But as the season progresses, a lot of the time the show uses the pros that have been eliminated as it makes scheduling easier and our jobs easier as the competition gets more intense.

When will you get to show off your piano-playing skills? Also your painting skills. Maybe you can do a piano duel with another pro while painting? –Lauren
I feel fairly certain that my painting skills might not be best shown on Dancing with the Stars. I’ll have to come up with another way to showcase that side of me.

Is there a celebrity (whether or not they’d ever do the show) who would be your dream partner? –Orville
For me a dream partner is someone who is willing to learn and to put their trust in me. That being said, I think Sandra Bullock would do a great job. She seems to have the kind of fun-loving personality mixed with a strong work ethic that would enable her to do really well.

Derek, I saw you in Burn the Floor on Broadway and you were phenomenal. I also read the amazing reviews you got from starring in Footloose in London. Any plans to do more theatre in the future? –Sarah
I’d love to do more theatre and acting. I attended a performing arts high school in London and it would be great to be able to put all of that training to use again.

I second the above question, and what about films? –Jane
Films and television opportunities are definitely things I’m exploring.

It seems every season, you do a dance with a hat. Is this intentional? Is there a story behind it? –Linnea
I never noticed! Maybe now I’ll make sure that I use hats more often. It could be my signature.

Leave your questions for Baby Derek in the comments!

Randy and Evi Quaid Face Arrest Warrants - Again - People Magazine

Randy and Evi Quaid Face Arrest Warrants – Again Randy and Evi Quaid mug shots

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department

Another case, another missed court date.

Randy Quaid and his wife Evi once again face arrest warrants after failing to show up for a Santa Barbara, Calif., hearing on allegations they were squatting in the guest house of a Montecito home they once owned.

Santa Barbara Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter tells the Associated Press that $50,000 warrants were issued after the couple failed to appear for the arraignment Monday on residential burglary charges.

As in their previous case, in which they were charged with defrauding an innkeeper and routinely missed schedule court dates, the two are free to turn themselves in before their case will be called again on Oct. 26.
